NOTICE: Due to rising hosting fees, and the sales of the "Hot Wheels VW Bus Guide" that I've recently published, this section will no longer contain values for the Buses. While this was a tough decision on my part, please understand that I have to respect those who have purchased and supported the guides. It didn't make sense to offer a publication for sale AND carry the same values on the website at the same time. Royalties from the books are helping offset hosting fees as well. REST ASSURED that all other Hot Wheels values on NCHWA.com (with the exception of the Treasure Hunts), will continue to be listed as a free service. This section will still be maintained to show all of the VW Bus releases to at least provide a pictorial record and reference.

The "Hot Wheels VW Bus Price Guide" is updated and issued annually, and can be purchased in a full-color version for $21.03, OR you can get the economy "Blackout Edition" for $11.99, which contains the exact same information, but is printed in all black and white for a substantially reduced cost. These can be purchased by going to my Amazon Author Page. The book is 108 pages, and contains values for Mattel and Liberty Promotions buses. Each bus is pictured, along with information and values. I've also included an interview with Liberty Promotions Creative Director Lee Pearlman, and a bonus section/interview with Bryan Pope of Pope Designs. You'll also get a Wheel Chart, Top 25 List of most valuable models for both Mattel and Liberty, Production Charts and more.

This resin model is an example of how the VW Bus might have been issued...had it not been totally revamped! Notice the Star Pro Circuit wheels that were being utilized at the time.

Original Mold
In a rare shot of a raw bus, you can see how the process begins. The present owner advises that he received these from an employee in the Malaysia plant. This is where it all begins!

Raw Prototype
Stage 2! This is a pic of a possible prototype or pre-production VW Bus. The present owner has assured me of its authenticity. Without the paint on the metal, you can see quite a few more details (and casting flaws!) then you would with the finished product. Now, it's ready for painting.

1996
First Editions
Collectors were scouring the pegs to find this one. Estimated run is rumored to be around 100K. It was immediately selling for $10.00 and up upon release, and was one of the catalysts that re-ignited the Hot Wheels phenomenon in 1996! Reissued in this paint scheme in the 30th Anniversary Series in 1998 (look for the 30th logo tampo), and the Hill's 1996 Year in Review set.
UNK
1996
Employee Christmas
Given only to Mattel Employees in December of 1996, this one is rumored to be very limited at around 100. Other than the Santa tampos, there are no other details. There is a major concern with this issue, in that it was very easy to duplicate. One small way to authenticate it is by looking for a green roll cage. (Last sold auction check was 10/17/2014)
100
1997
All Tune & Lube
The first promotional release of the VW Bus! The sporty flames on the sides made this one a big hit, since there were many collectors who never attained the '96 FE Bus. Oddly, the AT&L name does not appear anywhere on the blister card, or the bus itself. Great details on the front end, with painted lights and VW Symbol. Tail lights are in red. (This is technically a Liberty Promotions issued-bus)
50K
1997
JC Whitney
This bus had a limited run of 10K. For the longest time, it was the most limited Bus available to collectors, but has since been surpassed by several HotWheelsCollectors.com releases, with runs of 10K or less. Can still be difficult to find one at times today.
10K
1997
Custom Car Designer
This one created quite a stir when it was issued! It marked the first time the bus was again available at a retail level! The run number is undetermined, but this one is definitely NOT considered rare. Issued with no tampos, with the concept that you could use the software to print up your own decals. Ironically, this one could be hard to find someday, since many thousands of them likely met their demise to customizers everywhere
UNK
1997
Internet I
The first Bus offering by Mattel via online exclusive. Rumored to be limited to a run of 10K, but this has been difficult to confirm. It is comparable in value to the J.C. Whitney bus, and can be somewhat difficult to obtain. Great details, with all lights painted. Issued in a baggie, and not a blister card.
10K
1998
30th Anniversary
Same paint scheme as the 1996 First Edition model, except with a 30th Anniversary logo on the wing. It was issued in a box-type package, but the back of the blister card will definitely indicate that it's the 30th Anniversary model.

Jiffy Lube
Sharp bus with racing tampos. The bus does not have the Jiffy Lube name on it anywhere, but there is a JL sticker on the blister card. Limited to a run of 50K. Take a close look at the black Hot Wheels emblem on the side of this bus; curiously, it says "Hot Whee" instead. It appears that this went uncorrected for the entire run. (This is technically a Liberty Promotions issued-bus)
50K
1998
Van de Kamps
It took me awhile to actually like this one, with its daring bright green paint scheme, but it's turned into one of my favorites. This one was a mail-in offer by VDK. It was limited to a run of 50K. You had to eat a TON of fish sticks to get this one! All lights are detailed, except for the signal lights on the front. The VW symbol was left unpainted.
50K
1998
Blue Angels
This bus was the first of what was to be 4 military-themed buses marketed by M&D Toys. The blister card is one of my favorites, with a vibrant color photo of F-18 Hornets. Limited to a run of 20K, this issue was a tribute to the outstanding Navy flight team. The signal and headlights are painted silver, while the tail lights are in red. The VW symbol was left unpainted.
20K
1998
Thunderbirds
The second military-based theme to be issued. Marketed by M&D toys, this bus is limited to a run of 30K. Tampos are based on the Air Force's Thunderbirds flight team. Another very attractive blister card, with 4 F-16 Falcons on the front. Headlights and signal lights are painted silver, while the VW symbol was left unpainted.
30K
1999
Navy SEALs
The third military-based theme to be issued. Marketed by M&D Toys, this bus is limited to a run of 30K. Tampos are based on the Navy's elite SEAL team. Great aquamarine color makes this one stand out. The headlights and signal lights are painted silver, while the VW symbol was left unpainted.
30K
1999
Golden Knights
The fourth and final military-based theme to be issued. Marketed by M&D Toys, this bus is limited to a run of 30K. Nicely detailed, with all lights painted. Curiously, this issue marked 3 of 4 branches of the military being honored, however, the Marine Corps was never recognized for whatever reason.
30K
1999
Internet II
The second online exclusive offered at Mattel's website. Rumored to be even more limited than the first issue, at around 7K, but this has yet to be confirmed. Same details as the Internet I bus, but in a blue paint scheme. Issued in a baggie, along with a set of Revealers.
7K
1999
Internet III
The third Internet exclusive from Mattel, but with a completely different look. Limited to a run of 25K. This one took the longest to sell, finally being depleted in 2002 in a factory clearance. It was accompanied by a very cool gold Sojourner Mars Rover. All lights were detailed. Issued in a baggie, and not a blister card.
25K
1999
Malleco Tower Cranes
Also referred to as the "High Rise Express." Issued with some controversy on the actual run numbers. It was first rumored that only 8K were issued to the public, but many more have since surfaced, making it difficult to accurately annotate the true number. This one is a great one to have, though, with the deep burgundy paint, and good detailing throughout. First bus to use gold 5-spoke wheels, and not the traditional silver wheels.

1999
Collector's Guide
The second VW Bus to be offered with Mattel software. Issued in celebration of the 30th Anniversary, this CD-ROM fared much better than the first one, with its vast collector resources and pictures. The paint job is a reproduction Spectraflame Magenta. The bus itself is very attractive, and it was the first to use any kind of Redline tires. Unknown run number, but this one is not considered rare in any way.

Mattel Vendors Operations Asia
One of the rarer VW Buses ever made. This one is rumored to be limited to around 100, worldwide. It was issued in an acrylic plastic case with a green felt bottom. The MVOA bus displays incredibly well, and is the envy of Bus collectors everywhere. There are no tampos on this model; all emblems are actually water slide decals. These rarely appear on Ebay, so it'll be a truly difficult addition to add to your collection.

2001
Penske (black)
Penske threw its hat into the Bus Promotion ring with this issue. It sold out in a matter of two weeks. This was the first bus to utilize a wheel other than the standard 5-spoke wheels, by sporting a set of 6-spoke Pro Circuits. Also the first time that the Goodyear print appeared on the tires. (This is technically a Liberty Promotions issued-bus)
30K
2001
Penske (silver)
Imagine the surprise on some collectors' faces who ordered multiples of the black Penske bus! This silver version was inadvertently released early, supposedly in error. Nice change on the wheels, having utilized 5-spoke Pro Circuits. (This is technically a Liberty Promotions issued-bus)
30K
2001
Penske (red)
As if some weren't shocked by the 2nd issue coming out early, a few of these slipped out as well during the black Penske shipping, and went for a killing on Ebay, before finally becoming readily available. This might be the sharpest of the Penske buses, and the Star Pro Circuits wheels compliment it very well. This was the 3rd and final issue in the Penske Bus Series. (This is technically a Liberty Promotions issued-bus)
20K
2001
Penske (burgundy)
A small number of these pre-production models were shipped to Liberty Promotions; the color was not approved for sale, and the red bus was subsequently issued. However, it is believed that somewhere in the range of 50 of these were retained. If this is the case, then this would be one of the rarest non-Code 3 buses ever made. This version of the Penske bus may truly be a difficult (and expensive!) acquisition for Bus collectors.

2001
15th Ann. Convention
Issued in October 2001 in Irvine, California. This was the first VW Bus to sport Real Riders, and the second to come equipped with reproduction Redline Wheels. Tampos are highly detailed, which made it a highly-sought model. The model pictured at left is the correct version, with the yellow-tipped flame. The total run on this one is 6K, but there was an error/variation on the flame, which was limited to 2K, before being adjusted.

2001
15th Ann. Convention
This is the aforementioned 2K variation. Notice that the tip of the flame is red, and the yellow in the middle of the logo. Apparently, these were the first off the line, and approximately 2K were made before the error was caught and corrected. This version does sell for more on Ebay, due to the limited run of the error.

Hot Wheels Nationals
Issued by the administrators of HWC.com, and made available at the Nationals in Reston, VA in April 2002. A total of 5K were available to attendees in Virginia, and another 5K were sold online at HWC.com, for a total run of 10K. The body features a chrome appearance, and pinstriping by Wayne Scott. It's the second bus to feature Real Riders, and the 3rd to use Redline tires.

M.A.C.E.
The Midwest Air Cooled Enthusiasts Club (Wisconsin) teamed up with Mattel to offer this VW Bus in April 2002. Limited to a run of 25K, this bus features 5-spoke Pro Circuits, with plastic Goodyear tires on the front and rear. There is also an unfortunate memory attached to this bus, as several collectors didn't receive them in a timely manner after ordering them. The situation was set straight some time thereafter.

2002
Flying Customs
Issued online by HotWheelsCollectors.com in May of 2002. Limited to a run of 10K, this bus sold out in one day to Redline Club members. Very cool issue that reflects back on the 1975 Toy Fair era Super Van paint scheme, although the original had a "Flying Colors" tampo. Redline tires and Real Rider wheels complete this model. The finish is absolutely stunning, with chrome throughout, right down to the chassis and roll cage.
